Enneagram 6 wing 5 (6w5) – The Guardian

Do you often feel the need to be secure? Do you seek to achieve this by being as self-reliant as possible? Are you often detached from your surroundings? Are you an introvert? If you answered yes to a majority of these questions, chances are that you are an enneagram 6 wing 5. We’ll just call you a 6w5.

In-depth Description of Enneagram 6w5

Every enneagram type has a type on either side. These types are called the wings of the type in the middle.

These wings have influence over the main type. They are like additional flavor to the original type. While everyone can access both wings, one of those wings is usually dominant.

Thus, 6w5 is the enneagram type where type 5 is the dominant wing.

These people are often introverts who seek security in the world. While both 6w5s and 6w7s both want security, they go about it in different ways.

For 6w5s, security often means being self-reliant. They want to be independent and solve their problems by themselves.

Thus, 6w5s are going to be more introverted than their counterparts. They are also more likely to be detached and interested in intellectual discussions.

6w5s are also very creative people. Because they are still type 6s, they will often deal with anxiety. The difference though is that they are likely to deal with this anxiety themselves.

6w5s will often be great planners. Thus, they expect you to be the same. 6w5s hardly appreciate a surprise especially when it invades their personal space.

Make sure that 6w5s are always aware of your plans. While 6w5s will often battle with anxiety and depression more than any other type, they know how to conceal how they truly feel.

Thus, except for a few friends, most people might see 6w5s are quiet, opinionated people who seem to have complete control over their lives.

If you are facing depression and anxiety in your life, you might want to see a therapist. Here’s a link you can use to get started.

Overall, 6w5s are smart, introverted, and self-reliant.

Enneagram 6w5 in Stages

6w5s might look alike but there will be slight differences. This is often because of the strength of their wings. Generally, the strength of their wings can be divided into strong or pronounced, average or weak.

6w5 (Strong)

This type is going to show strong traits of their wing 5. They are very knowledgeable and detached from their environment.

This often comes at a price. These types are introverts and might have few friends. They are also the most likely to keep their anxiety to themselves. They will also be very creative.

With this type, growing a friendship or relationship takes time.

6w5 (Average)

This type variant will show moderate traits from their wing. They are going to be more concerned about security. This will make them more people-oriented than those in the first category.

Thus, they might seek to build up their networking or gain favor with those already having authority. Their wing 5 will see them take an interest in abstract ideas and thinking.

6w5 (weak)

When their wing is weak, they are going to look more like a core type 6. They will much more anxious and take their security more seriously.

These types are going to make decisions based on their need to be secure. However, they will also have some creativity from their wing 5 show up in their hobbies or career.

What is the Core Desire of an Enneagram 6 wing 5?

The core desire of 6w5s is to be secure. They try to achieve this by being self-reliant and having a lot of connections or a wide network.

While this is true, 6w5s will have only a few close friends.

What is the Core Fear of an Enneagram 6 wing 5?

Their core fear is to be unstable or insecure. To them, relying too much on people or being seen as weak emotionally is one way this can happen to them.

Thus, being self-reliant is one way they counteract this fear.

Strengths of an Enneagram 6w5

1.      Creativity

6w5s are very creative people. Thus, it is not surprising that these types can go on to be great writers or graphic designers.

The extent of their creativity will depend on the strength of their wings. Their creativity also makes them great at solving problems where ever they go.

2.      Hardworking

6w5s have a high work ethic. They often can work very long hours without complaining. This makes this type very reliable.

Their willingness to work hard stems from their wings. They want to feel competent and self-reliant. Working hard and being reliable will certainly help them feel that way.

3.      Curiosity and Passion

6w5s are very curious people. To make sure they satisfy this craving, they usually study a lot. This might not necessarily mean that they are academically inclined.

It just means that they can read up on anything that they are interested in.

They are also very passionate about matters or things they love. Thus, a 6w5 who loves their job will be willing to make progress and develop themselves further.

4.      Practical and Realistic

While they can be very passionate and sometimes dreamy, 6w5s are very realistic people. Because of this trait, 6w5s will usually only put effort into things that they believe can succeed.

To other types such as type 7s, this can make them seem pessimistic. However, 6w5s just want to be sure of themselves before making a decision.

5.      They can Work Alone

6w5s are introverts. This means that they like their alone time. Because they get energized by staying alone, working alone will not be a problem for them.

This does not mean that 6w5s cannot excel while working in a group. On the contrary, being in a group of like-minded people allows 6w5s to talk about their problems and figure out better ways to solve them.

6.      Opinionated

While they are introverts, 6w5s have very strong opinions. They also don’t hide back from saying what they feel or think.

While they might not be extroverted, they will always have their own views when approached. 6w5s are one of the types that have little chance of becoming people-pleasers.

7.      Extremely Logical

6w5s are very logical people. Thus, most of their decisions will be based on logic and the need to be secure.

It is very likely then that 6w5s will often value a cautious approach to certain situations more than going all in.

They often like to test the waters. This applies to their relationships with others as well as their workplace.

8.      Very Protective

6w5s might have few people they are close to. However, they can be extremely protective of them. The worst thing you can do is to pick on someone that 6w5s hold dear.

It just won’t end well.

Weaknesses of Enneagram 6 wing 5

1.      Negative Thoughts

Negative thoughts and pessimism are something that most 6w5s struggle with for the rest of their lives.

6w5s have a lot of anxiety that they are constantly dealing with. If you are an INTJ 6w5, here’s a guide that might help you cope with your anxious thoughts.

2.      Bad with Expressing Emotions

While 6w5s are very adept at logical and rational thinking, they suck at expressing their own emotions. It is not surprising that some 6w5s think that expressing emotions shows vulnerability.

Because of this, being in a relationship with feeler types might prove to be a tough task. If you are in a relationship with a 6w5, then you should be prepared to give them time.

With time, they will feel comfortable enough to express their feelings.

3.      Isolation

6w5s are introverts. Thus, it is not a surprise that they need a lot of alone time. However, this can become a problem when they are stressed.

There is a tendency to withdraw into their shell when facing big issues in life. This might put a strain on their relationship with their loved ones.

It might also be fatal if they are having suicidal thoughts or other mental issues. If you have these issues, it might worth seeing a therapist or confiding in someone.

4.      Perceived as Insensitive

6w5s are often viewed as insensitive. Because they are introverted and use a lot of logic, people see them as indifferent or simply aloof.

Most 6w5s will have a death stare. This often seems intimidating to a lot of people. However, most 6w5s barely know when they pull this off.

Enneagram 6w5 and Stress

Just like any enneagram type, certain things are bound to stress the 6w5 out. Here are some of them.

·         People’s Emotions

6w5s firmly believe that people should have full control over their emotions. Thus, they might be overwhelmed if someone kept pouring their emotions on them.

The truth is that 6w5s already have a lot of things on their plate. Adding your frequent emotional outbursts to it is not something they look forward to.

·         Expressing Themselves Emotionally

As earlier stated, 6w5s have issues expressing their emotions. Thus, forcing them to do this will make them stressed.

This might be a problem if they are in a relationship with a partner that requires a lot of affirmation. Here’s an article that talks about words of affirmation.

·         Inconsistency

6w5s are really hard workers. They are also very reliable. Because of this trait, they naturally expect this in others.

Thus, when people fail to live up to their expectations, this can stress the 6w5. They might also see that person as unreliable or lazy.

Enneagram 6w5 and Finances

6w5s are especially conscious about their finances. They want to make a lot of money. However, this is for reasons totally different from type 3s or Type 8s.

For 6w5s, money makes them secure. Thus, having more of it makes them less worried about their financial status. Thus, money is both a source of worry and a sense of security for 6w5s.

  1. Thank you for such an in-depth look at the 6w5. I’ve never really benefited much from personality tests, I don’t really need another result telling me I’m an introvert with difficulties expressing emotions. But when I started reading about the enneagram, it was a game changer for me. For the first time I had an explanation for why I am the way I am and my struggles, with the added benefit of learning what do do about them.

When I read on my core type it explained some things, but not all. But incorporating my HUGE 5 wing explains me perfectly.

I know understand my strengths and weaknesses, which helps me be a more balanced person. Thanks again!
